Vision Tech Guide: the Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation rim treatment.
Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) is an electrochemical surface treatment process for generating oxide coatings on metals. It is similar to anodizing, but it employs higher potentials, so that discharges occur and the resulting plasma modifies the structure of the oxide layer.
A wide range of substrate alloys can be coated, including all wrought aluminum alloys and most cast alloys, although high levels of silicon can reduce coating quality.
Surface coatings formed through plasma electrolytic oxidation can offer 2-4x more hardness than hard anodizing or steel, and provide increased wear resistance. The combination of these qualities and the comprehensiveness of protection has made PEO a breakthrough surface engineering innovation.

“These are probably the most unobtrusive wheels I've ever tested – and that's a very good thing. For a start, they're straight and true, and the spoke tension is decent, which will help them stay that way. They're laterally stiff enough that I couldn't get them to rub on the brakes, even though I run the blocks close to the rim so they come on at a touch. They're unaffected by sidewinds because they're only 30mm deep, enough to give them a slight aero advantage over old-school square rims, but not enough to affect handling when it's windy. Even the freewheel noise is relatively quiet. Very easy wheels to live with, then.”
