FSA BB386Evo bottom bracket system revealed

New BB system addresses growing complexity of the market

Conceived in order to allow one bottom bracket axle to fit several of the current bottom bracket shell “standards” while offering a degree of “future-proofing” against further developments, FSA’s BB386Evo bottom bracket and bearing concept is based on an extruded aluminium axle 30mm in diameter.

It is based in the existing BB30 concept, which also features a 30mm diameter axle, and not surprisingly will fit  ”standard” and press-fit BB30-type shells. It will also fit conventional 68mm wide threaded shells and its own BB386shell. the key is the increased width of the axle, which allows FSA to use it with external-type bearings in threaded cups.

FSA says that bearing adaptors will allow the system to accept cranksets with 24mm diameter axles; the result is either bewilderingly complex or a stunningly simple answer to the steady proliferation of crankset and axle formats. If the latter, which is what it looks like, then FSA stockists at least will be able to offer a one-crankset solution to almost any bottom bracket shell-posed problem. BB386 will be offered on four FSA crankets: K-Force Light, K-Force Light Compact, SL-K Light and SL-K Light Compact.
