May 25, Stage 4: Schierling (ITT) 31.2km
Lampre-Merida Italian takes over general classification lead
Adriano Malori (Lampre-Merida) doubled up at the Bayern-Rundfahrt today as he won the 31.2km stage four time trial and took over the general classification lead with one stage remaining.
Malori, a former U23 time trial world champion (2008) and Italian time trial champion (2011), stopped the clock in 38:19 to beat Jasha Sütterlin (Thüringer Energie Team) by 18 seconds while Jan Barta (NetApp-Endura) finished in third place at 19 seconds.
Geraint Thomas (Sky) and Jérémy Roy (FDJ) finished fourth and fifth respectively at 19 and 26 seconds.
Malori, who entered the stage in third overall, time trialled himself into the leader's jersey as Thomas jumped from sixth to second at 23 seconds and Barta moved up into third on general classification at 26 seconds.
Overnight leader Gerald Ciolek (MTB-Qhubeka) conceded 1:22 to Malori and dropped to 10th overall at 1:13.
"I've had this time trial in my mind for a long time, so I'm happy to have hit the target," said Malori. "During the season I won a time trial and I got two second places behind [Tony] Martin, so I was willing to open the second part of the season in a good way.
"I'm very happy I could finalise all this work and, especially, the work by my team that had planned in the previous stages to give me special support in order to battle for the overall classification leadership."
