Malori dominates time trial in Coppi e Bartali
Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali 2013
Ulissi maintains race lead over Cunego, Rubiano
Former Italian time trial champion Adriano Malori gave Lampre-Merida another stage victory in the Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali, winning the stage 4 time trial over Anton Vorobyev (Katusha) by 14 seconds. Moreno Moser (Cannondale) was third fastest, 16 seconds behind Malori.
"It's never easy get to the victory when you're the favourite, but today I was really willing to end a series of missed successes, some of them for only few seconds," Malori said. "Vorobyev, the under 23 world champion in time trial, had a very good performance, so I needed to be perfect: I started very well and I ended in an even better way."
It was the third consecutive stage win for the Lampre-Merida team, after Diego Ulissi put in a commanding performance on stage 2 to take the race lead, which he kept in today's time trial, and Damiano Cunego's victory on stage 3.
Ulissi leads the race by 1:35 over his teammate Cunego, with Miguel Angel Rubiano (Androni Giocattoli) falling to third overall at 1:48. Ivan Basso moved up into fourth at 1:59.
The race concludes Sunday with a 141km stage from Monticelli Terme to Fiorano Modenese, which has a sharp climb on the four closing circuits.
