Team Rider David Williams Wins Bronze At U.S. Pro Time Trial Championships
GAINESVILLE, GEORGIA (May 27, 2014) — David Williams won the bronze medal at the Volkswagen USA Cycling Professional Time Trial National Championships in Chattanooga, Tenn. on Saturday. The 5-hour ENERGY® presented by Kenda Racing Team rider clocked a time of 39 minutes and 12 seconds over the undulating 19-mile course.
“Placing third at the USPro Time Trial Championships is an enormous boost for myself and 5-hour ENERGY presented by Kenda Racing Team. A podium at nationals is exactly what we needed going into the second half of the season, and I am so happy that I could deliver this result,” stated Williams, of Grand Rapids, Mich., who finished one minute and 24 seconds behind the winner Taylor Phinney of Colorado.
“It was a huge honor to wear our team colors on the podium on Saturday. This result now brings more motivation than ever looking to the races ahead,”
Teammates Taylor Shelden, Jim Stemper and Christian Parrett finished 13th, 16th and 21st respectively.
“David did a fantastic ride finishing third,” Directeur Sportif Frankie Andreu commented. “Overall, it was a great ride by the 5-hour ENERGY riders at the time trial.”
The nine Americans on the 5-hour ENERGY team lined up for the Road Race Championships on Sunday. Sam Bassetti and Stemper made their way into the break that escaped early in the 102.8-mile road race. A late attack on the fourth and final time up Lookout Mountain shed most of the break including Bassetti but Stemper was still in the front group. In his first race back since breaking his collarbone back in April, Stemper showed great form and attacked non-stop in what many called the most aggressive ride of the day. The Wisconsin native battled to a sixth-place finish. The 32 racers out of 81 starters who finished the race included Gavin Mannion,19th, Shelden, 31st and Jon Hornbeck, 32nd.
Bobby Sweeting was also slated to race both the time trial and road race but suffered a broken collarbone after being hit by a car after being hit by a car in Asheville during a training ride two days prior to the event.
The 5-hour ENERGY team will head next to Philadelphia, Pa. to race the Parx Casino Philly Cycling Classic, a UCI-1 event part of the America Tour on June 1.
